The ruling on giving Gifts for the newborn Child
Question :
What is the view of the Islamic law concerning what some women do, that when one of their women friends is granted a newborn child, they give her what is called the 'Hafalah'? This is an expression used for a sum of money. Is there any basis for this in the Islamic law?
Answer :
There is no harm in giving gifts for the newborn child when it is born according to the basic principle. This is because the basic principle regarding gifts and all dealings is permissibility and correctness, except for what there is an evidence for its forbiddance. If the custom is that when a child is born to the people, its relatives give some money as a gift to it, there is no harm in a person doing that. This is in following the culture and what is customary and it is not done as a form of worship for Allâh.
